Matthias Gronstedt

Managing Director, HHLA Sky

Matthias Gronstedt is a Managing Director of HHLA Sky. In 2018 he started with the following job description:

“Make drones usable in a scalable and efficient way for industrial settings – open up the 3rd dimension, safely and securely, to existing business processes and add innovative new ones!”

Drawing on his decades-long involvement in industrial networking and automation as well as his IT-background, along with extensive international experience in technical and strategic sales and business development, he set out (with a small team) to develop an entire system.

This HHLA Sky drone management and control center is primed for use in critical infrastructure, but also beyond. It allows active and intelligent control and monitoring of 100+ drones and their tasks at different sites from one integrated control center. The system, consisting of both hard- and software elements, has gone public and has been operational since early 2020.

Prior to HHLA Sky, Matthias has worked with HPC Hamburg Port Consulting as a Digital Strategy Consultant – after having completed a total overhaul of a construction material supplier. There, as the Managing Director, he increased sales by 50% in just two years, and implemented e-commerce as well as digitally automated processes throughout.

Matthias Gronstedt studied at ESMT in Berlin, Germany and holds an engineering degree in information technology/ IT, furthermore a diploma in technology management.

The bulk of his professional career though, he has spent working for Siemens, the largest industrial company in Europe. There he held a variety of leading positions, travelled and worked extensively internationally and was selected for their elite Global Emerging Leaders Program.

HHLA Sky is leading the automation of the industrial employment of large drone fleets around the world. For this purpose, the start-up of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) is providing an advanced technology platform. As a technological leader, HHLA Sky advises users on how to better and more efficiently achieve their business and financial goals with drone solutions.
